WASHINGTON, June 27 (UPI) -- A plurality of U.S. voters agree with the Afghanistan withdrawal plan President Obama announced last week, a poll conducted for The Hill indicated.
Thirty-nine percent of likely voters said they thought the pace of withdrawal outlined by Obama is "about right," results released Monday indicated.
Thirty percent said they believe the scheduled pullout is not fast enough and 28 percent said they think U.S. troops are being withdrawn too hastily, results indicated.
Obama said during a televised address Wednesday 10,000 U.S. troops would leave Afghanistan before the end of this year, and 23,000 more would be withdrawn by September 2012.
Results indicated relatively few voters said they thought the plan Obama announced would harm his re-election bid. The Hill poll indicated 40 percent of likely voters said they believe the plan would enhance his chances of winning a second term while 43 percent said it would make little difference.
Results are based on nationwide telephone interviews of 1,000 likely voters conducted by Pulse Opinion Research Thursday. The margin of error is 3 percentage points.
