Kilpatrick's book proceeds in escrow

DETROIT, June 21 (UPI) -- A judge has barred former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick from making any money off an upcoming book until he has paid almost $900,000 in restitution.

"Surrendered! The Rise, Fall and Revelation of Kwame Kilpatrick," published by Creative Publishing Consultants Inc., is scheduled for release Aug. 1, The Detroit News reported. The rights to the book are owned by Aktion Enterprises, a firm controlled by Kilpatrick's sister, Ayanna Ferguson.

Wayne County Circuit Judge David Groner released an order Monday that all proceeds from the book, priced at $26.95, go into an escrow account. District Attorney Kym Worthy told the judge at a hearing last week that Kilpatrick still owes $861,399.80 of the $1 million he agreed to pay in restitution to the city as part of a plea deal to a perjury charge.

Groner sent Kilpatrick to prison last year for violating his probation. The former mayor, now seeking parole, is also awaiting trial on federal corruption charges.
