NEW YORK, June 20 (UPI) -- Charlotte Bloomberg, mother of New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, died Sunday at the age of 102.

"As the center of our family, our mother's unimpeachable integrity, fierce independence, and constant love were gifts that profoundly shaped our lives and the lives of so many who knew her," Bloomberg said in a statement.

"Our family recognizes how truly blessed we have been to have her live such a long and full life, and to be able to carry her spirit with us forever."

"She was always uplifting, always wanting to help people," Charlotte Bloomberg's next-door neighbor in the Boston suburb of West Medford told the New York Daily News. "She was proud of her children and her grandchildren. She was the most wonderful neighbor I ever knew. She was so alert and so bright. She was a charming lady."

Bloomberg was unable to attend her son's third inauguration, having been present at the first two.
