Severe storms race across Georgia, Florida

ATLANTA, June 18 (UPI) -- Strong storms with lightning and large hail pummeled the Atlanta area Saturday, leaving 63,000 without power and killing at least one person.

One person was killed when a tree fell on a car in Marietta, and Georgia Power said at least 63,000 people were without power in Atlanta and across northern Georgia, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Trees and power lines were knocked down, and multiple house fires were reported, possibly started by lightning strikes, the newspaper said.

Severe storms producing winds above 70 mph also raced across Florida Saturday, prompting tornado warnings, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

The National Weather Service detected tornadoes near Wedgefield and the Orlando International Airport. The tornado warnings expired at 8 p.m., with severe storm warnings expiring an hour later.
