OKLAHOMA CITY, June 15 (UPI) -- Strong winds accompanied by large hail hit the Oklahoma City area, tearing a roof off an apartment complex and breaking telephone poles in half, officials said.

"We are going to have roofs damaged, lots of power lines down, we've got multiple trees and limbs down, (air conditioning) condenser units blown off of roofs," Norman Fire Deputy Chief Jim Bailey told The Oklahoman. "That was a telephone pole that came down and hit a vehicle. That person had a laceration on his head, but he will be OK," Bailey said.

Hail the size of tennis balls was reported along with the damaging winds Tuesday night, the newspaper said.

An estimated 33,000 residents of Norman lost power Tuesday as severe winds tore through the area, ripping the roof off a building at the Parkland Apartments on Woodcrest Drive, leaving dozens homeless, The Oklahoman said.
