Mara Skinner, who lives in Yale near Port Huron, testified as the trial opened Tuesday. She described waking on Nov. 11 to find she was being stabbed and seeing a masked man after her husband turned on the light.

"I had no idea what was happening. I just knew I was being attacked," she said. "It was continuous stabbing."

She said a day earlier she had taken away her daughter's phone when she learned she was still seeing Kurtz. Tia Skinner is biologically Mrs. Skinner's niece, but her aunt and uncle brought her up as their own and adopted her when she was in high school.

Jeffrey Skinner, an emergency room nurse, testified Wednesday. He described finding his father in the bedroom, still alive but covered in blood.
