MIAMI, June 13 (UPI) -- Residents in West Miami could expect smoke to be blowing into the area from the West Miami-Dade wildfire that consumed about 68,000 acres, officials said.
Fire officials said Sunday the smoke would be in the air as firefighters battle the wildfires that have plagued the area for about a week, The Miami Herald reported Monday.
"Smoke will be blowing into urban areas," Florida Division of Forestry spokesman Scott Peterich said. "People will smell smoke."
Fire officials said the blaze was about 85 percent contained.
The cause of the fire remains unknown although one line of thought is that the blaze was sparked by all-terrain vehicles and dirt bikes running in the area, the Herald said.
"It's way too dry right now to use an ATV," firefighter spokesman Dan Herrera said.
