WASHINGTON, June 13 (UPI) -- Conservative U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., said Monday she has filed the paperwork necessary to run for president next year.

The House Tea Party Caucus leader told CNN she had submitted the paperwork and plans to make a formal announcement of her candidacy "soon."

Bachmann took part in a Republican presidential debate in New Hampshire Monday night where she disclosed her entrance into the race, CBS News reported.

"I filed today my paperwork to seek the office of the presidency of the United States today and I'll very soon be making my formal announcement," she said.

The third-term congresswoman, the second Minnesota Republican to jump into the race after former Gov. Tim Pawlenty, later e-mailed a statement broadly outlining her perspective on what the nation needs.

"Our country needs a leader who understands the hardships that people across America have been facing over the past few years, and who will do what it takes to renew the American dream," she said. "We must become a strong and proud America again, and I see clearly a better path to a brighter future."

Bachmann reiterated during the debate her intention to seek the repeal of the federal healthcare reform that has been the centerpiece of Democratic President Barack Obama's first term in office.

The growing GOP presidential field is currently led in the polls by former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who also ran in 2008.
