Guilty verdict in murder conspiracy

CHICAGO, June 7 (UPI) -- An Illinois man has been found guilty of conspiring to kill an assistant U.S. attorney and a Drug Enforcement Administration agent.

Prosecutors said Frank Caira of Downers Grove, Ill., reportedly feeling the pressure of a federal drug case against him for allegedly manufacturing drugs in his home, conspired with a friend and a former gang member to kill Assistant U.S. Attorney Shoshana Gillers and DEA Special Agent Patrick Bagley in 2009, the Chicago Tribune reported.

A federal jury found him guilty Monday.

Caira plotted with a friend, Jack Mann, and the former gang member, Ricardo Ruiz, to have the attorney and agent killed.

The plot came to light when Ruiz came forward to an attorney who was handling a separate case for him, prosecutors said, and both the FBI and the U.S. Marshals Service in Chicago investigated the threats.

Mann awaits sentencing for his part in the conspiracy while Ruiz does not face charges, prosecutors said.
