Serial killing trial begins in Phoenix

PHOENIX, June 6 (UPI) -- An accused serial killer went on trial in Phoenix Monday with prosecutors saying he left his DNA on five of his victims.

Mark Goudeau, 46, whom authorities call the "Baseline Killer," is charged with 74 felonies, including nine murders and rapes, attempted rapes and robberies, committed in 2005 and 2006.

In opening statements, prosecutors said Goudeau tried but failed to wipe the evidence off with a towel, KNXV-TV, Phoenix, reported.

The DNA led to a search of Goudeau's home where a victim's jewelry and a shoe with another victim's blood on it were found, the state said.

Prosecutors also showed crime scene photos in court.

Goudeau is already serving a 438-year sentence for raping two sisters in a park, The Arizona Republic reports. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty in the new case.

The killer, named for initial attacks near Baseline Road, would seize women off busy street corners, some in daylight. He wore hats, wigs and masks, and police say he killed the women who resisted rape.
