LOS ANGELES, June 3 (UPI) -- Air-quality regulators and several local governments in California have sued Home Depot Inc., claiming the company is selling illegal paints and other products.

The nation's largest home-improvement chain is accused in two lawsuits filed Thursday of selling paints, wood lacquers and other coatings containing excessive levels of smog-forming chemicals, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The suits claim Home Depot sold the illegal products at more than two dozen stores across Southern California, even after it was notified it was violating local air regulation laws.

One complaint, filed by the South Coast Air Quality Management District, charges Home Depot with violating the California Health and Safety code and calls for $30 million in civil penalties.

The other suit, filed by attorneys from Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties, charges the company with unfair business practices and false advertising.

Home Depot said it cooperated with regulators after being notified of the code violations.

"We have fully cooperated and removed the products in question," the company said in a statement. "We believe the government has a mistaken view of the facts, and we are fully prepared to defend our position."
