YUMA, Ariz., June 2 (UPI) -- A 73-year-old gunman killed five people Thursday in a shooting spree in and around Yuma, Ariz., before taking his own life, police said.

The gunman, identified as Carey Hal Dyess, was found about 11:30 a.m., authorities said.

Police have not released the names of the victims, but Yuma attorneys Vida Flores and Amanda Taylor told the newspaper one of the victims was Jerrold "Jerry" Shelley, a divorce lawyer who was clearing out his office as he prepared to retire after practicing law in Yuma for more than 30 years.

"Apparently, (Dyess) did not want to shoot the secretary, so he told her to get down. Then he shot Jerry," Flores told the newspaper.

She said Shelley had served an order of protection on behalf of a client prior to the Thursday shooting.

Four of the fatal shootings took place in Yuma County and one occurred in the city of Yuma, about 185 miles southwest of Phoenix, Yuma police Sgt. Clint Norred said.

The Yuma Sun said the incident began Thursday morning with a call about a woman found dead in the yard of a home outside Yuma. The call was followed by reports of other shootings in the area, including one of a self-inflicted gunshot.

Schools in Yuma were locked down for a period and city workers were urged in an e-mail to use caution. The e-mail from City Administrator Greg Wilkinson said it was believed the shooter was targeting specific people, the Sun said.
