Jury hears Anthony police interview

ORLANDO, Fla., June 1 (UPI) -- Sheriff's deputies who responded when 2-year-old Caylee Anthony was reported missing in 2008 testified Wednesday at her mother's murder trial in Orlando, Fla.

Cpl. Yuri Melich, the Orange County Sheriff's Office's lead investigator in the Anthony case, read the jury a transcript of his first interview with Casey Anthony, the Orlando Sentinel reported. Anthony told Melich she had last seen her daughter in the company of her nanny, Zenaida Fernandez-Gonzales.

Jurors also heard a recording.

Anthony claimed the nanny had been caring for Caylee while she worked at Universal Studios. She gave Melich details, such as the names of co-workers, but they turned out not to have worked there.

Anthony said at the time she had not told her parents about her daughter's disappearance "out of fear."

Lt. Reginald Hosey, another responder, said he noticed a bad smell from Anthony's car. But he said he did not investigate the source of the odor or ask crime scene investigators to examine the car.

Anthony's brother, Lee Casey, also testified Wednesday.
