LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 31 (UPI) -- Two Iraqis suspected of having been part of the insurgency in Iraq have been arrested in Kentucky where they were living, federal authorities said Tuesday.
Waad Ramadan Alwan, 30, allegedly carried out numerous improvised explosive device attacks against U.S. troops in Iraq, the U.S. Justice Department said in a release. Mohanad Shareef Hammadi, 23, is alleged to have tried to provide material support to al-Qaida in Iraq and other terrorists.
The two men were living in Bowling Green, Ky., when arrested last Wednesday and made their first court appearances Tuesday in Louisville.
A 23-count federal indictment unsealed Tuesday charges Alwan with conspiring to kill U.S. nationals abroad, conspiring to use explosives against U.S. nationals abroad, distributing information on the manufacture and use of IEDs, attempting to provide material support to terrorists and to al-Qaida in Iraq, and conspiring to transfer, possess and export Stinger missiles.
Along with trying to help al-Qaida, Hammadi is charged with conspiring to transfer, possess and export Stinger missiles.
Neither is charged with plotting attacks within the United States, federal prosecutors said.
