WASHINGTON, May 29 (UPI) -- The United States would make a mistake if it used the death of Osama bin Laden as a reason to speed up its withdraw from Afghanistan, Sen. John McCain said.

McCain, R-Ariz., said Sunday that Bin Laden's death did not mean the battle for Afghanistan was over and al-Qaida could bounce back using it as a base.

"We've also got to remember that it was Afghanistan where the Sept. 11 attacks began," McCain said on "Fox News Sunday. "If Taliban and then al-Qaida take over in Afghanistan we could see a very, very serious threat to the United States national security."

McCain agreed with the contention that the Taliban might agree to some kind of negotiated settlement, but only if their backs were against the wall.

"I always thought conditions on the ground should dictate withdrawals," McCain said. "But the president also emphasized 2014. I believe that by 2014, we will have succeeded in Afghanistan."
