BOSTON, May 27 (UPI) -- Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick spent more than an hour on the witness stand Friday testifying at a federal corruption trial.
The governor, who spent about 70 minutes testifying, was a prosecution witness against Salvatore DiMasi, former speaker of the state House of Representatives, and two co-defendants, the Boston Herald reported. DiMasi allegedly took $65,000 in payoffs Canadian company Cognos in return for a $15 million software contract for a performance management system.
Patrick said he had a number of discussions about the contract with DiMasi. The governor said he was interested in the system but wanted to postpone considering it.
"Don't forget, that contract's important," Patrick said DiMasi told him in 2007.
When news broke in 2008 that the contract had been rescinded, Patrick said DiMasi was "angry and upset."
Patrick and DiMasi are both Democrats.
