Four inmates hurt in San Quentin fighting

SAN QUENTIN, Calif., May 23 (UPI) -- Four inmates were seriously injured in a 200-man uprising involving "various ethnic groups" at California's San Quentin State Prison, an official said.

The four were taken to area hospitals because their injuries were too serious for treatment at the prison, the Marin [Calif.] Independent Journal reported Monday.

Lt. Sam Robinson, prison public information officer, said the injured inmates sustained slashing and stabbing wounds in the outbreak Sunday. He said 10 inmate-made weapons were later found.

"Various ethnic groups were involved," Robinson said.

No staff members were hurt, he said.

It wasn't immediately known what caused the uprising.
