CHICAGO, May 23 (UPI) -- One person was injured when a truck carrying cattle tipped over outside Chicago, spilling animals from an overpass onto a highway below, police said.

The incident Sunday at the Interstate 294 interchange near Hazel Crest in Cook County resulted in 16 cattle being killed while others roamed near the scene, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The Illinois State Police said the overturned vehicle was carrying 36 animals.

Some of the animals fell about 25 feet from the I-80 eastbound ramp and landed on the southbound lanes of I-294 below. Several vehicles struck the animal carcasses, leaving one motorist with minor injuries.

Don Matthews, 55, witnessed the incident.

"It was quite a sight," Matthews said. "It was kind of a surreal thing."

Cook County animal control officials were called to pick up the remaining cattle.
