SoCal man sentenced for stalking cop

SANTA ANA, Calif., May 20 (UPI) -- A Southern California man was sentenced to five years in prison Friday for stalking a police detective investigating him in another alleged stalking case.

Brian Dopler, 28, Huntington Beach, was convicted last year for stalking and attempting to make criminal threats against a Huntington Beach detective who was investigating a complaint from Dopler's ex-girlfriend.

The Orange County District Attorney's office said in a written statement that Dopler, who was on probation at the time for threatening the woman, made 14 harassing phone calls to Detective Gary Kim in late 2009 and early 2010. He demanded to know if Kim was investigating him and on Feb. 10, 2010, left a profane and racially insulting message for Kim in which he threatened to kill him.

Prosecutors said Kim, a 15-year veteran, did not fear for his life, which resulted in Dopler not being convicted of actually making a criminal threat.

Nevertheless, Kim told the court Friday that he had serious concerns that the situation could deteriorate further and pose a risk to the woman. "Mr. Dopler never apologized or had remorse for his actions but considered his arrest as silly," he said.
