PHOENIX, May 20 (UPI) -- More than 3,000 patients have submitted applications to join Arizona's medical marijuana program, the Arizona Department of Health Services said.

The ADHS said Thursday it has approved 3,149 of the 3,335 applications it has received since the acceptance date of April 14. The remaining forms are being reviewed or in need of further information from patients, KTAR-TV, Phoenix, reported.

Most of the applicants list chronic pain as the reason for wanting the medical marijuana. The ADHS said of the applicants, 1,392 were at least 51 years old. Figures for three younger age groups were about even -- 629 from 18-30 years old; 664 in the 31-40 age range and 650 from 41-50 years old.

The state legalized medical marijuana last year and the official start date for the program is June 1.
