Facebook page of serial killer taken down

HOUSTON, May 18 (UPI) -- Facebook, responding to a request from the state of Texas, has taken down a page of a convicted Houston serial killer, officials said.

A Houston woman whose brother was a victim of Elmer Wayne Henley Jr. notified authorities about the page, KHOU-TV, Houston, reported Wednesday.

Cyndi Yates said she was appalled when she came across a Facebook page for the serial killer.

Henley is serving six life prison sentences for his part in the torture-slayings of 27 youths in the Houston area in the 1970s.

The Office of the Inspector General requested that Facebook take down the page.

"Facebook's rules prohibit the creation of fake profiles and sharing profile access details with other people and we will remove accounts that violate these policies," the company said in a statement.

It was unknown who created the page.

"Prisoners are not allowed to have Facebook pages and so that's what makes me think a friend or follower has put that up," Gerald Treece, a legal analyst for KHOU-TV, said.
