WASHINGTON, May 17 (UPI) -- Rep. Todd Akin, R-Mo., announced Tuesday he will run for the U.S. Senate seat occupied by Democrat Claire McCaskill in 2012.

"I am today announcing my candidacy for the United States Senate because of my deep concern about the condition of our economy, the debt and excessive federal spending," Akin said in a statement posted on his Web site. "I am deeply grateful for the support and encouragement I have received from fellow Missourians who share my convictions."

Akin, in his sixth term in the U.S. House, said the "common sense and sometimes uncommon wisdom" of his constituents "not only guided but also encouraged me as I have fought against the government takeover of our healthcare and many other aspects of our lives and businesses."

Akin, known as a fiscal conservative, said he has considered a run for the U.S. Senate for a while.

Former Missouri Treasurer Sarah Steelman already announced her candidacy on the GOP ticket.
