WASHINGTON, May 16 (UPI) -- U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Jordan's King Abdullah II provides a steady voice in the fast-pace changes occurring worldwide.

"He is a strong and steady voice in the incredible changes that are going on around the world," Clinton said before the two entered bilateral discussions. "He's a great friend and partner to the United States. We count Jordan as a nation that we share many common interests with and we have pursued many common objectives."

The monarch said the Jordanian mission was in Washington not only to discuss relations between the two countries and the challenges in the Middle East, but also the Arab Spring, the months of pro-democracy uprisings that have spread across northern Africa and the Middle East.

"That is a challenge for all of us to hopefully get it right and the role of the United States is going to be crucial how the Middle East moves in what direction," Abdullah said.

The king meets with President Obama Tuesday.
