Gioeli: 'Going to hell' for nun's killing

NEW YORK, May 13 (UPI) -- An alleged New York gangster fears eternal damnation for a botched hit that killed an ex-nun, he states in federal court papers.

Thomas "Tommy Shots" Gioeli told a government informant he was "going to hell" for the 1982 killing, The New York Post reports, citing documents released in Brooklyn federal court Thursday.

A shotgun blast aimed at mob-linked pornographers Joseph Peraino Sr. and Jr. penetrated a neighboring home in Brooklyn, killing Veronica Zuraw, a social worker and former nun who was hanging laundry at the time.

Gioeli's claim that he and fellow Colombo hit man Joseph Carna were involved is the first new information on Zuraw's death in years. Louis Zuraw died in 1986, never knowing who killed his wife.

Peraino Jr. was killed and his father paralyzed. The mob believed they embezzled profits from "Deep Throat."

Informant Salvatore Miciotta, another alleged hitman, had said the Peraino murder was ordered by Colombo boss Carmine "The Snake" Persico, who was already serving 100 years and was never prosecuted in the case.

Gioeli has not been charged in the Zuraw case but his statements were presented as evidence of an organized crime career. He was indicted in six other killings in 2008 as well as racketeering and extortion.
