WASHINGTON, May 11 (UPI) -- A Republican congressman has questioned National Endowment of the Arts grants to San Francisco mimes and an international accordion festival.
At a House Appropriations subcommittee hearing Wednesday, Rep. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., grilled NEA Chairman Rocco Landesman over the grants, The Hill reported.
"Those kind of grants just lend themselves to ridicule," Flake said. "These are a bit tough to justify. How can we justify these types of grants?"
Giving taxpayer money for such performers and musical events "feeds the cynicism out there about everything we do," Flake said.
In responding, Landesman said many of the programs given NEA support could not exist without the help.
"The marketplace shouldn't be the sole determinant of what is allowed to flourish," Landesman said.
The Obama administration has said it wants to reduce NEA funding by 13 percent from 2010 levels, but as the House tries to reduce discretionary spending across the board the agency could see deeper cuts.
