SOUTH BEND, Ind., May 9 (UPI) -- Democratic Rep. Joe Donnelly announced Monday he is running for Republican Sen. Dick Lugar's seat in Indiana next year.
Lugar, 79, has served since 1976 and is the third most senior senator member and most senior Republican. He had no Democratic opponent in 2006 and was re-elected with 87 percent.
Donnelly's entry gives the Democrats a top-tier candidate in case Lugar does not survive the GOP primary.
Tea Party activists see Lugar as too liberal and state Treasurer Richard Mourdock has already announced a primary challenge, The Hill reports.
Tim Roemer, a former Democratic congressman from Indiana who is now ambassador to India, had been mentioned as a candidate but is now being touted as the next secretary of commerce.
By running for the Senate, Donnelly leaves his Republican-leaning district open to a possible comeback bid by the representative he unseated in 2006, Chris Chocola.
