RIVERSIDE, Calif., May 6 (UPI) -- A California sheriff says his department has suspended its ride-along program after a second deputy was arrested for having sex with a teen Explorer Scout.
San Bernardino County Sheriff Rod Hoops told The (Riverside, Calif.) Press-Enterprise the department has put the program on hold for at least 60 days.
The sheriff's Explorer Scout program gives young people ages of 14-21, who are interested in law enforcement, a chance to experience actual police work.
The incident was the second of its kind in as many weeks involving deputies arrested on sex-related charges with underage female teens.
Deputy Anthony Benjamin, 30, of Beaumont, accused of sex-related charges involving a 17-year-old was arrested and booked Wednesday.
Deputy Nathan James Gastineau, 30, of Redlands, is scheduled to be arraigned June 27 in San Bernardino Superior Court on sex-related charges involving a 16-year-old girl.
Both deputies have been placed on paid administrative leave.
"As the sheriff of San Bernardino County and a parent myself, this is very disheartening," Hoops said. "I'm alarmed."
