Mayor Tony Mack said Sigmund's status would be reviewed when he completes a rehabilitation program. But Acting Police Director Joseph Juniak demanded that he be fired and not allowed to work for the city again in any capacity.

"To even consider a return to work is a slap in the face to my officers," he said.

Sigmund has been charged with possession of 10 packets of heroin and assaulting two police officers while resisting arrest. He is free on $25,000 bail.

Sigmund's mother, the late Barbara Boggs Sigmund, was mayor of Princeton for several years. She was the daughter of U.S. Rep. Hale Boggs, D-La., and Lindy Boggs, who won her husband's seat after his death.

Paul Sigmund III, Sigmund's father, is an emeritus professor at Princeton University.
