Arrest in 1992 Spokane, Wash., slaying

SPOKANE, Wash., May 4 (UPI) -- Cold-case detectives Wednesday arrested a suspect in a 1992 slaying during a furniture store robbery, the Spokane County, Wash., Sheriff's Department said.

Patrick Gibson, 58, of Stanwood, was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder in the death of Brian Cole, the owner of the store.

The killing was the result of a struggle between Cole and Gibson after Gibson allegedly indicated he might harm Cole's wheelchair-bound wife. The case was featured on the television series "America's Most Wanted" in 1993, but a suspect was not identified.

The sheriff's department said in a written statement Gibson was tracked down through evidence that had not undergone DNA testing at the time of the crime. The DNA matched Gibson, who was registered as a sex offender and was easily located in Stanwood.

Detectives also learned from the FBI Gibson had a record for armed robberies committed while wearing a fake beard and cap similar to the one the suspect in the Cole slaying wore.
