WASHINGTON, April 30 (UPI) -- Republicans could wring more spending cuts from President Obama by revisiting the U.S. debt limit every two months, a leading tax activist says.
Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform, told The Hill he is discussing the plan with Republicans in the House of Representatives.
"My argument is, you give them two months at a time, because each time you could get something reasonable," Norquist said.
With the 2011 budget negotiations finally out of the way, Republican leaders say there are two more times when they will leverage with Obama and the Democratic majority in the Senate. One is the upcoming 2012 budget negotiations. The other will be the vote on raising the debt limit, currently at $14.3 trillion.
The Obama administration has not proposed an increase, although Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner has suggested $2 trillion might be about right.
Rep. Tim Huelskamp of Kansas, a freshman and member of the conservative Republican Study Committee, said he opposes any debt-limit bill that allows the government to continue borrowing into the next fiscal year.
"It is the only leverage that we have over a Senate and a president that is seemingly unconcerned about the over-spending," he said.
