PROVO, Utah, April 28 (UPI) -- An artist who has produced a right-wing take on the U.S. Constitution claims Brigham Young University refuses to sell the painting because it offends liberals.
John McNaughton's "One Nation Under God" shows Jesus in Washington holding a copy of the Constitution -- joined by presidents George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Reagan and U.S. soldiers -- The Salt Lake Tribune reported Thursday.
In one corner of the image, the artist shows those he thinks are fomenting socialism, including a college professor. He also depicts Supreme Court decisions he does not like, including Marbury vs. Madison, which established the court's power to interpret the Constitution, and Roe vs. Wade.
Brigham Young is operated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. McNaughton, who works in Provo, Utah, says his picture is in line with the LDS belief that the Constitution was divinely inspired.
Carri Jenkins, a university spokeswoman, said the bookstore decided to stop selling the picture for business reasons -- some people found it offensive and the bookstore's main focus is religious art.
