Wildfire burns near Kennedy Space Center

TITUSVILLE, Fla., April 27 (UPI) -- A wildfire burned within 1 1/2 miles of the vehicle assembly building of the Kennedy Space Center in Florida Wednesday, officials said.

Officials with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said the blaze had burned about 50 acres of the Merritt Island National Refuge south of the space center, the Orlando Sentinel reported.

Refuge spokesman Dorn Whitmore said the fire was heading north at a brisk pace. He said fire crews and three fire engines were working the fire but it wasn't clear how long it would take for them to get it under control.
