MARTINSVILLE, Ind., April 26 (UPI) -- An Indiana teenager charged with wounding a former classmate should be tried as an adult for a "planned act of violence," a judge said Monday.
Michael Phelps, 15, was to be transferred to the Morgan County Jail, the Indianapolis Star reported. He has been held in a juvenile facility since his arrest.
Superior Court Judge Christopher Burnham described the crime as "a cold, calculated and planned act of violence with the intent to kill." The judge noted Phelps is about to turn 16.
The teenager allegedly went to Martinsville West Middle School March 25 with a gun he had stolen and shot Chance Jackson, 15. The victim's family said Friday he is "beginning a long recovery."
Phelps faces charges that include attempted murder. As an adult, he faces a long prison term if he is convicted.
