Mayor: Shariah not the law in Dearborn

DEARBORN, Mich., April 21 (UPI) -- Dearborn, Mich., may be home to one of the largest Muslim communities in the United States, but its mayor points out it also has a pork sausage factory.

In an open letter to Terry Jones, the Florida pastor known for threatening to burn Korans and for burning Korans, Mayor Jack O'Reilly Jr. said Dearborn hardly looks like a city governed by Islamic religious law or Shariah, the Detroit Free Press reported. In addition to Dearborn Sausage, which is next door to the first mosque in the city, Dearborn has three strip clubs.

"If Dearborn practiced Shariah law, would we have three adult entertainment bars and more alcohol-licensed bars and restaurants per capita than most other cities?" O'Reilly asked in an open letter released Wednesday.

None of the city's Muslims have ever objected to Dearborn Sausage even though they are barred by their religion from eating its products, he said.

Jones, pastor of a small church in Gainesville, Fla., plans to come to Dearborn on Friday for a demonstration outside the city's largest mosque. He refused to put up a court-ordered peace bond Thursday afternoon, opting instead for a trial on the issue.
