Adam Baker, an Australian, had been held in the Catawba County Jail since April 13, WBTV, Charlotte, N.C., reported. He made bond Saturday, but a hold was placed on him and he was turned over to federal custody Tuesday morning.
Baker's attorney says he is in Caldwell County, N.C., wearing an ankle bracelet monitored by federal officials.
He had hoped to get his passport back and return to Australia but was arrested last week on charges of identity theft and obtaining property -- electric power -- by false pretense, Hickory, N.C., police said.
He is due back in court May 4.
Baker is not charged in the death of Zahra Baker, 10, but his wife, Elisa, is accused of second-degree murder.
She denies the killing and says her husband dismembered the girl's body after she died.
