MIAMI, April 19 (UPI) -- A Miami man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for an attack that left his battered wife blind in one eye and partially blind in the other. Eugene Roman, 50, pleaded guilty to aggravated battery and kidnapping for dragging his wife by the hair and gouging her eyes in May 2006, The Miami Herald reported Tuesday.

Roman gouged out his own eyes six years ago while in the Miami-Dade County Jail for beating his wife.
Prosecutors said he became infuriated with her when she rejected his sexual advances after accepting him back into their home following his release from jail.
Roman has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and depression.
"I know I did something wrong," he told the judge Monday. "I was wrong. I regret it. I ask for forgiveness."
His estranged wife, 48, said she wanted him "away from me the rest of my life."
