Priest named youngest bishop at 41

SAN ANTONIO, April 18 (UPI) -- A priest from the Archdiocese of San Antonio will become the country's youngest Catholic bishop in Detroit, the church announced Monday.

The Rev. Antonio Cepeda, 41, is currently the rector of Assumption Seminary.

He will take office May 5 along with two other auxiliary bishops in a ceremony presided over by Detroit Archbishop Allen Vigneron.

San Antonio Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller said Cepeda will be missed but will be a "blessing" to his new community.

Born in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, Cepeda came to the United States with his family at the age of 19, already pursuing a priestly vocation. He was ordained in 1996 and later attended St. Thomas Aquinas Pontifical University in Rome, where he earned a doctorate in sacred theology.

Since returning to San Antonio, he has been the archdiocese's vocations director, among other posts.
