While 50 percent of Americans said they thought they paid too much in federal tax, 43 percent said they thought their federal tax bill was about right and 4 percent thought it was too low, results released on the day taxes were due indicated.
The 50 percent of people who said their taxes were too high falls within the 46 percent-to-53 percent range found each year on this question since 2003, the Princeton, N.J., polling agency said.
The poll also indicated 57 percent of Americans viewed what they pay in income taxes as "fair" and 40 percent said what they pay is not fair. Gallup noted that more Americans indicated they consider their taxes "fair" than said they pay the right amount, indicating more people don't like what they pay rather than think their tax bill is unjust.
Results are based on nationwide telephone interviews conducted with 1,077 adults April 7-11.The margin of error is 4 percentage points.
