Detroit churches aim to serve 10,000 meals

DETROIT, April 17 (UPI) -- The first Detroit "Prayer Walk" drew some 20,000 participants in an effort to recruit community service volunteers, organizers say.

Local pastors joined members of some 500 area congregations Saturday, speaking during the procession held in front of Comerica Park, The Detroit News reported.

"We're bringing the faith community together to help bring solutions to the issues and the problems that we have in this community. We believe anything dead can rise," Bishop Edgar Vann, of Second Ebenezer Church told the paper.

Marchers set an almost 2 mile course from the baseball field to the Spirit of Detroit statue and then back.

As a result, some 7,000 volunteers were expected to sign up to volunteer serving 10,000 meals to the needy for 40 days, beginning Easter Sunday.
