LONG ISLAND, N.Y., April 11 (UPI) -- Investigators on Long Island, N.Y., searching for a serial killer said they found more bones Monday and are trying to determine whether they're human.
Police, searching for Shannan Gilbert, missing since May, have discovered the remains of eight people, four of whom identified as prostitutes who advertised on Craigslist as did Gilbert.
The latest discovery was about 5 miles from the area where the other skeletal remains were found on popular Jones Beach, ABC News reported.
"We want to bring to justice this animal that has obviously taken the lives of a number of people," Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano said.
The bones were found by a New York State police officer using a cadaver dog.
A 50-person team broadened its search from Suffolk County to Nassau County Monday.
The fear of a serial killer arose in December when four bodies were discovered near Gilgo Beach in Suffolk County. The victims all were identified as prostitutes who advertised their services on Craigslist.
Sources said there are several suspects who could be tied to the Long Island bodies, ABC News reported.
Meanwhile, a teenager whose sister was found buried on Long Island told ABC's "Good Morning America" she fears the presumed killer isn't done and may come after her.
The girl's older sister, Melissa Barthelemy, disappeared in July 2009. Her body was found in December along with the bodies of three other women.
Barthelemy's sister said the person's taunts are angry and scary.
"My heart would stop and I just didn't know what to do. I'm scared of my own protection, the fact that he's calling my phone ... I have to be worried about is that going to happen to me one day?" she said.
The teen said she believes the man isn't finished.
"If he's doing that many murders he's not going to stop," she said. "He obviously enjoys it and he's sick in the head."
Nassau Police spokesman Kevin Smith said searchers would be "looking for human remains and any possible evidence."
