Plane smashes into house; pilot dies

BIDDEFORD, Maine, April 11 (UPI) -- A single-engine airplane smashed into a house in Biddeford, Maine, Sunday evening, killing the pilot and setting the home ablaze, authorities said.

The Portland Press Herald reported the home's owners, Kim and Steve Myers, had left to have dinner at her sister's home not long before the plane hit the roof about 6 p.m. and caught fire.

Biddeford Fire Department Capt. John Pothier said it appeared only one person was in the plane. The victim's name had not been released.

The home is about a mile from the Biddeford Municipal Airport. Arlene Salac, a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration, said the pilot's destination was unknown.

"We have very little information at this point," Salac said. "All I can tell you is that it's a small general-aviation aircraft with one confirmed fatality."

Salac said the National Transportation Safety Board will take over the investigation.
