Couple jailed after tot wanders off twice

ELGIN, S.C., April 11 (UPI) -- A South Carolina couple is in jail after their toddler wandered off for the second time in a week, authorities say.

Jacklyn Jacobson, 25, mother of the 22-month-old boy, and her boyfriend, Jose Gloria, 21, of Elgin, S.C., were jailed Sunday for unlawful neglect of a child, Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews told The (Columbia) State.

The boy and a 6-month-old baby were taken into protective custody by state authorities. The boy's father is in the military and stationed in Hawaii.

The boy first disappeared April 1, and a 25-person search party spent the night hunting for him using bloodhounds and a helicopter with infrared gear. Matthews credited the family dog for saving him by cuddling with him.

The child was found wandering again by a neighbor Sunday morning, Matthews said.

State Department of Social Services investigators were called to the home after first incident and found it in "deplorable" shape, the sheriff said.
