NORFOLK, Va., April 10 (UPI) -- An ill African elephant has taken "a turn for the worse" at the Virginia Zoo, a zoo spokesman said.
The lifespan of African elephants in North America is around 35 years and 38-year-old Monica, who has spent her life in captivity at the Virginia Zoo, has been losing weight and trunk coordination, The (Norfolk) Virginian-Pilot reported Sunday.
In February zookeepers began noticing a change in Monica's physical condition and behavior, but things changed abruptly Saturday morning, zoo spokesman Winfield Danielson said.
"Things seemed to take a turn for the worse in the past 48 hours," Danielson said.
Zoo officials were unable to determine a cause for Monica's condition and called in a special elephant veterinarian in March to evaluate her health, the newspaper said.
African elephants can survive up to 60 years in their native habitat.
