Election dispute continues in Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis., April 9 (UPI) -- Attention in Wisconsin's disputed Supreme Court election focused Saturday on one county where thousands of votes turned up the day after the election.

The votes appear to have given Justice David Prosser a lead that his challenger, JoAnne Kloppenburg, is unlikely to overcome. While both Prosser and Kloppenburg promised to be impartial judges, the race became a surrogate for supporters and opponents of Republican Gov. Scott Walker.

Kloppenburg supporters spent the day in Waukesha County comparing voting machine tapes with polling place books, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. Brian Neimor, Prosser's campaign manager, said the campaign would accept a Waukesha-only recount and believes he will be the winner.

Election Day ended with the candidates in a near-tie. Kloppenburg was ahead by a few hundred votes until the additional votes from the city of Brookfield surfaced, but Prosser now has a lead of more than 4,000.

Also Saturday, several hundred union members and supporters rallied at the statehouse in Madison, the State Journal reported. They planned a weekend of workshops and other events.

"This is about regrouping for the long haul," Ben Manski, a Madison lawyer, said.
