SACRAMENTO, April 7 (UPI) -- The average salary for U.S. governors fell recently, particularly because California dropped its governor's pay by $39,000, a Washington survey indicated.
The drop in California happened in one year. In 2009 Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger earned $212,179, and in 2010 he earned $173,987, Stateline.org reported Thursday.
Schwarzenegger, wealthy from his movie career, never collected his salary, Stateline.org reported.
The most recent compensation survey by the Council of State Governments indicated the average governor's salary in 2010 was $130,595, 4 percent lower than in 2009, Stateline.org said.
Budget problems forced the state's Citizens Compensation Commission to lower salaries across the board, and another 10 percent cut is expected for 2011, said commission Chairman Chuck Murray.
"We're broke. It's no more difficult than that," he said.
Florida and Hawaii were the two other states that decreased their governors' salaries from 2009 to 2010. Florida cut the salary by 2 percent to $130,273, and Hawaii slashed its pay by 5 percent to $117,312, Stateline.org reported.
