The battle flag was raised Friday over the Anderson County Courthouse in Palestine, Texas, by the local Sons of Confederate Veterans to honor 1,100 local men who served in the Civil War, WFAA-TV in Dallas reported.
Mayor Bob Herrington called an emergency meeting Monday to ask the county commissioners to remove it, saying, "I don't pledge allegiance to the Confederate flag.
"When you fly a flag on a government-owned piece of property that divides people, it destroys the concept of unity," he said.
Just as the City Council was about to vote, the mayor got word that the SCV had decided to take the flag down on its own, letting the county off the hook.
