Authorities sent a reverse 911 call to residents living in the fire area warning them about the possibility of wind-driven flare-ups. The Crystal Fire consumed an estimated 50 homes as it burned a narrow path directly west of where it started.

"The house is a smoking hole," said resident Curt Busby, who watched his four-bedroom home burn. "Not even the smallest item is left."

In Texas, firefighters battled a 5,000-acre wildfire that threatened several homes near Brownwood, the Abilene (Texas) Reporter-News said.

The fire was described as 90 percent contained Monday.

A wildfire in South Carolina that charred more than 2,000 acres along the Charleston and Georgetown County lines has become the subject of an arson investigation, an official said.

Spokesman Scott Hawkins of the South Carolina Forestry Commission said its apparent the fire was deliberately set, WCIV-TV, Charleston, S.C. reported.
