WASHINGTON, April 5 (UPI) -- A bloody pig's foot and a note containing anti-Semitic material was sent to the Washington office of Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., Capitol Hill police said.
The police said they are treating the Monday incident as an "open investigation," NBC news reported.
The note referenced King's controversial Homeland Security Committee meeting last month about what King called the radicalization in the American Muslim community. King is the committee chairman.
It was not clear if the package was mailed because of the hearings, the New York Daily News reported. King is not Jewish.
"The package was discovered at a mail facility off the Hill early this morning. We have an active open investigation regarding the incident and are working with postal inspectors," Capitol Police Sgt. Kimberly Schneider said.
Ibrahim Hooper of the Council on American-Islamic Relations said his organization regularly receives pig-themed hate messages, including letters smeared with bacon. The Muslim religion forbids eating pork.
"My guess is it was an anti-Muslim bigot," Hooper said, "and bigots not being brain surgeons they probably got their signals crossed."
