HOULTON, Maine, April 4 (UPI) -- A Canadian accused of threatening to blow up a bus with a fake bomb in northern Maine will undergo a mental examination, police said Monday.

The man, tentatively identified as Daniel Maccabee, is facing 22 charges after a long standoff Wednesday night.

"There has been suspicion that he may not be any of the aliases that he has given us, but we're checking into that," Lt. Dan Pelletier of the Houlton, Maine, police told Canada's Postmedia News.

Police said Maccabee boarded a Cyr Line bus in Bangor and later claimed to have a bomb and demanded the driver stop at the Canadian border.

The driver refused and pulled into the border town of Houlton, with eight people aboard, around 8:45 p.m. Wednesday. U.S. Border Patrol and Maine State Police surrounded the scene and arrested Maccabee at 4:30 a.m. Thursday.

The device found in his clothing -- fashioned from a Wii controller, wires and a notebook -- was a fake, police said.

Maccabee, who is believed to be from Quebec but living in Madison, Wis., faces counts including assault, terrorizing and aggravated reckless conduct.

He has appeared in court, but not yet entered a plea, and is being held at the Aroostook County Jail in Houlton.
