Regrets, but no apology for Koran burning

GAINESVILLE, Fla., April 1 (UPI) -- Pastor Terry Jones said Friday the deadly attack on the United Nations in Afghanistan confirms his contentions about Islam being a violent religion.

Jones sent out an e-mail statement to the media Friday after an Afghan mob went on a post-prayers rampage over his symbolic burning of a Koran March 20.

The statement said the attack, which killed eight U.N. staff members, called the incident "tragic" but added Islam "is not a religion of peace."

A member of Jones' Florida church told the Los Angeles Times she was not overly concerned about the attack linked to the congregation. JoBeth Gerrard told the newspaper what happened in Afghanistan Friday was only the latest incident of radical Muslim violence.

"I keep up with what's going on and I know that (Muslims) are constantly killing people, burning churches and killing Christians," Gerrard said. "Whether some guy in the U.S. burns a Koran or not, it doesn't make any difference."
